When I first happened upon this scene in North East New Mexico, I was struck by the abundant richness of color, even though the sky was cloudy at the time. With sunlight the description would simply be, wow!

I knew this was a location I wanted to paint in the late afternoon light, but it was a long distance from where I was lodging and driving back at night along unfamiliar curvy mountain roads was not my idea of a relaxing drive.

Happily I found a family owned convenience store which had a small furnished upstairs room for rent in the nearby town of Amalia.. It was clean and the bed was comfortable, but the walls followed the pitch of the roof which made navigating the small bathroom very interesting. It would have been the perfect size for a five year old or maybe a contortionist. However, the room did have a small refrigerator, microwave and satellite TV which I could channel surf for entertainment.

This became my base location for a couple of days while I painted along a 30 or so mile stretch of road that offered an overwhelming amount of subject matter.

This painting is currently on display and for sale at Griffith Fine Art at 229 North Main Street in Salado, Texas.
